Taxpayers should be wary of a scam using the SA Revenue Services (SARS) logo to defraud people, an official warned. “Members of the public are randomly emailed with false spoofed emails made to look as if these emails were sent from SARS, but are in fact fraudulent emails aimed at enticing unsuspecting taxpayers to part with personal information, such as bank account details,”  SARS spokesperson Marike Muller said. Muller said in a statement some of the emails from returns@sars.co.za or refunds@sars.co.za , indicating that taxpayers were eligible to receive tax refunds. The subject of some of the emails was “Your payment from SARS” and the wording was “Dear Taxpayer, accept your refund here from the Refund Section”. Others had a link which read: “You have an important message from SARS eFilling”. People have contacted us to check with us if these emails were genuine or not,” she said. The emails contained links to false forms websites for people to enter their personal information, such as bank account details. She said taxpayers not to open emails from unknown sources.  The emails were sent in January. “SARS will not request your banking details over the phone, or via email or websites.”

New tax collection powers for SARS

Johannesburg -  The SA Revenue Services (SARS) has acquired new powers to gather intelligence on taxpayers and collect revenue. People and companies, such as lawyers, estate and medical aid funds, now had a duty to submit information about their clients to SARS, the Times reported.  The powers were reportedly gazetted last month and followed provisions of last year’s Tax Administration Act, Which allows certain high-ranking SARS officials to authorise searches without warrants.  “Ask anyone in the industry and they will tell you SARS is much more aggressive, “ SA Institute of Professional Accountants national tax committee chairperson Ettiene Retief told the newspaper.  One of the biggest changes in the new Tax Administration Act was the broadening of the scope of the information SARS could request, he said.  SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay reportedly confirmed the new regulations “SARS can request any information from a bank account of a taxpayer as part of its third-party data verification, “he told the Times. It was increasingly using intelligence gathered through more than half a decade of e-filing “to aggressively patch the holes in the tax net,” SA Institute of Tax Practitioners CEO Stiaan Klue told the newspaper.
